Institutional Tokenization of Real-World Assets (RWAs) Accelerates, Prioritizing Interoperability**
**Key Finding:** The tokenization of real-world assets is moving firmly into advanced, large-scale implementation, driven by major financial institutions, central banks, and infrastructures like SWIFT. The focus has shifted from isolated proofs-of-concept to building interoperable networks, signaling a foundational change in market structure aimed at creating new liquid markets and dramatically improving settlement efficiency.
**Detailed Analysis:**
The scale and seriousness of institutional commitment to tokenization have become undeniable. In **May 2024, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS)** expanded its **Project Guardian**, adding 17 global giants like Citibank, BlackRock, and BNY Mellon to pilot tokenized money markets, FX, and wealth products. This is not exploration; it is ecosystem construction. Simultaneously, **SWIFT** announced progress on its collaboration with 12 major FIs, including JP Morgan and DTCC, to ensure seamless interoperability between different DLT platforms and traditional systems. This addresses the critical challenge of fragmentation, paving the way for a viable, interconnected global market for tokenized assets.
Individual institutions are building out their service stacks to support this new market. On **June 11, 2024, BNY Mellon** announced an expansion of its digital asset capabilities to support clients issuing their own tokenized products. Meanwhile, central banks are building the settlement layer, with the **Central Bank of Brazil's Project Sela (wholesale CBDC)** advancing to its next phase in May 2024, explicitly designed to support tokenized asset settlement. Together, these initiatives represent a coordinated, multi-pronged effort to build the infrastructure for a tokenized future, promising new revenue from novel financial products, reduced settlement risk, and lower operational costs.
